Applying a Weight-Inclusive Framework Reflection Essay
While reading through the passage, it shocked me that the configuration of BMI formed a way to discriminate against overweight people by defining anything out of the BMI as abnormal. BMI clearly outlines that being above the recommended number is a problem that needs to be addressed. The idea of BMI leads to the popular belief that thin people should be concerned whenever they see an overweight person. The ideas shared in the book are novel and helpful in changing society’s approach to fat people. However, since the author focuses on BMI as a tool to discriminate against overweight persons, it is crucial to understand that the BMI standards target overweight and underweight persons equally. The passage fights against the institution of BMI, whose sole purpose is to show that a person is and has to be unhealthy above BMI.
I can apply the health practice from a weight-inclusive lens by understanding my body type and not comparing it to others I interact with daily. Additionally, I encourage the community to change their notion concerning overweight people and challenge the idea that being overweight is unhealthy. However, before going to the community level, I would be at the forefront of encouraging weight inclusive health attitude by being the change I long to see in society. At a national level, weight inclusive campaign can be addressed by strengthening the rights of all people regardless of their body size. The BMI stigma can be changed not to be a measure of unhealthy but to be used as a gauge of the healthy standard instead, removing all the harmful comments surrounding the topic. Other forms of stigma resulting from BMI and doctoral advice can be fought by encouraging all the people involved to refrain from verbal and physical stigmatization concerning overweight.
I always thought that weight stigma and body size were simple topics; however, I have discovered that there is more to learn beyond weight stigma and body size. Aside from the stigma from society concerning weight and body size, the psychological stress for people living with a weight problem is overburdening. Therefore, rather than stigmatize, we should accept those who are okay with their body size and offer help to those who need it. The stigma concerning weight, health, and body size is retrogressive to our society. This course unearths some of the hidden truths and misconceptions surrounding weight, body size, and fitness which is the core of this course’s strength. The system is radical enough to impart knowledge to all the students. Yes, you may use my response in the future.
