This psychology research paper examines the role of attachment theory and parenting styles in shaping emotional and social development in children. It analyzes authoritative and negligent parenting approaches, drawing from John Bowlby’s theory to highlight how early relationships with parents or caregivers impact interpersonal skills, self-regulation, and long-term mental well-being.

Understanding Attachment Theory and Parenting Styles: A Psychological Perspective

Child-parent relationship is crucial in the development of a child especially in the early and teenage stage. Attachment is one of the basics that play the crucial role in early child development as it forms the basis for emotional and social well-being. According to John Bowbly attachment theory, it is important to secure a healthy relationship between the parents and the caregiver (Bergen, 2022). This gives a child the ability to regulate emotions, explore environment and form healthy relationships with others. Also from the video of parenting styles, I consider authoritative style as the most effective as it also helps a child to be keener, understand when they are wrong and make healthy relationships.

There are different parenting styles that significantly impact a person’s upbringing.

One of the specific styles that have influenced my friend’s upbringing is negligence style. Her parents are always busy with their schedules and for the longest time she spent most of her time with the care giver and in her room (YouTube, n.d.). She could only see her parents during weekends or miss to see them. Her relationship with other people is very poor and she is not able to talk out in case she feels she is not doing well. This kind of upbringing has made her lose many opportunities because she cannot prove she is capable.

Yes I think understanding attachments theory informs our perceptions and experiences through highlighting the enduring influence of early relationships on later development. From Bowlby theory in module 1, “the attachment behaviour is instinctive protection” (Bergen, 2022). This perspective can change our view on interpersonal relationships and mental health to impact our early attachment experiences. The theory states that attachment is fundamental to human development.
